Back Pain

The spine bears the stresses of our daily activities. With such a complex structure, it can be challenging to find the exact cause of back pain as it may be attributed to a number of interconnected structures, the response of the nervous system and even related psychological factors. Luckily, healthcare providers, including your chiropractor, can perform a comprehensive examination, including ruling out serious pathologies, to determine a diagnosis and recommend strategies for the best course of care.

What back pain can we help you with?

Low Back Pain

Low back pain, is very common, affecting four out of five people at least once in their lifetime. In Canada, back pain continues to be the most common health complaint of people aged 12-44. In many cases, pain may naturally resolve within a few days to a few weeks. However, in others, the pain may persist and become chronic, significantly impacting quality of life and ability to work.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve runs down the length of each leg, starting in your low back and ending at the heels of your feet. Sciatica is a term used to describe the pain caused by irritation of that nerve.

Sciatica is different from low back pain in that it results from the sciatic nerve, rather than the spine. This nerve serves an important function, affecting the hamstrings, calf muscles, lower leg muscles, and some foot muscles. In many cases, the pain gets worse with twisting, bending, sneezing or coughing.

Disc Injuries

A herniated disk refers to a problem with one of the rubbery cushions (disks) that sit between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack to make your spine.

A herniated disk, which can occur in any part of the spine, can irritate a nearby nerve. Depending on where the herniated disk is, it can result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg.

Many people have no symptoms from a herniated disk. Surgery is usually not necessary to relieve the problem.

O.A & Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spaces within your spine, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel through the spine. Spinal stenosis occurs most often in the lower back and the neck.

Some people with spinal stenosis may not have symptoms. Others may experience pain, tingling, numbness and muscle weakness. Symptoms can worsen over time.

Spinal stenosis is most commonly caused by wear-and-tear changes in the spine related to osteoarthritis.

Rib Irritations

A rib injury is a bruise, strain, break, separation, or irritation of one or more of the ribs in your chest. It can also be an injury to the tissue called cartilage that attaches the top 10 ribs to the breastbone.

Irritation of a rib is called costochondritis. It may be caused by an infection or repeated coughing, or by overuse, like from rowing or heavy lifting. Sometimes the cause is not known.
