Our Concussion Protocols

Dr. Zuback is proud to be a certified Level 1 Shift Concussion Management provider. She utilizes the most up to date, evidence based care to manage concussions and stresses an interdisciplinary team approach.

No longer is the “sitting in a dark room” approach the first line of treatment with regards to concussion treatment. Concussions, like other injuries, should be properly managed and rehabilitated. Having a health professional guide you through this step-by-step may prove to be invaluable.

When a concussion is suspected, Dr. Zuback highly recommends consulting with your doctor and booking an initial assessment as early as possible.

What is a concussion

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that occurs when your brain shakes inside your skull. This incident can potentially damage the blood vessels in your brain or injure its tissue. All it takes is a hard tumble on the basketball court or a blow to your head or body. Yes, that’s right — you don’t necessarily have to hit your head. For example, when your body stops suddenly due to a hard tackle or a strong pick, it can cause whiplash and a concussion.

How we can help you navigate the concussion recovery process

Recovering from a concussion can be a difficult and frustrating time. I understand that each patient is affected differently and as such, requires individualized care.

Management strategies are used to limit the amount of impairment as well as expedite recovery as much as possible. Individualized energy management strategies and home instruction.

It is recommended that athletes and active individuals undergo a step-wise process of physical exertion testing once symptom free. Similar to weight training, athletes recovering from a concussion should not skip to 100% exertion from 0% in a short time frame.

Physical exertion testing is important not only for physical reconditioning, but to guard against symptom relapse and help prevent premature return-to-sport. Dr. Zuback can help guide you in this process.
